[ Although the image is mostly Wash's face, there's enough background in the shot to make it clear that he's standing in one of the Eluvio's corridors. There's a door behind him and just off to the left is a sign that reads: SIMSPACE. Once the feed's going, he jerks his thumb back toward the door. ]

If I don't come out of here in like a day, send someone in to get me.

[ He pauses, making a slightly exasperated, slightly apologetic face. ]

And hey, if using this thing unleashes some kind of virtual reality nightmare on everybody, sorry. [ Does that require a little clarification? Maybe it requires some clarification. ] I've seen the old movies. I know how this shit goes.

[ Agent Washington. Always a pessimist. He offers a faint, tiny smile. ]

Otherwise, if anybody wants to visit one of the beaches on my homeworld, come on down. I can give you the grand tour.

If it's sci-fi armageddon, I might need you to head down to the animal shelter for me and feed all the cats before we all get killed. Something tells me "killed by a computer program" isn't going to impress my boss.

[ He jokes but he knows people that's happened to. ]

Feeding cats at an animal shelter in space? Mission accepted!

Yeah? Tell you what. If you see one you like while you're there, go ahead and take it. As a little thank you.

Are you serious? Just like that, you'd let me have one?

[sixth]

Sure. I mean, not if you eat them or anything like that.

[angele]

No! Definitely not interesting in eating cats. I eat common human food from Earth.

It's just a really nice thing. I'm Clary, by the way.

Wash. Short for Washington. Creative, I know. It's nice to meet you, Clary.

This your first time in space?

[angele]

I've never heard that name before, so I think it is yeah. It's nice to meet you, Wash.

And yeah. I've never even left the country.... properly... before this. I left once but that's a weird story. Anyway. Now I'm in space....

Is this your first time, too?

[sixth]

No. I've been in traveling in space since I was 18. I was born in the Leonis Minoris system.

But hey, you've got one up on me. I've never been Earth. I've heard about it. Seen pictures and vids. Thought about going and paying the homeworld a visit. But I never got the chance. Which part are you from?

[angele]

Sounds like we've both been to places the other hasn't seen before. Where were you before you were 18, then?

I'm from the United States. New York, actually, if you've heard of it?

[sixth]

One of the colonies in the system. My dad died in the war and I had a lot of sisters, so we didn't have much money to travel off the planet.

Yeah. Yeah, I have. One of my best friends was named after it. York.

[ Wash's life is basically woe and misery. But he's trying to keep it upbeat! Being depressing to the new people isn't conducive to making anyone feel better. ]

[angele]

I'm sorry about your dad. Did you at least have your mom, too? [ Her father may not actually be dead, but that's only something recently discovered. Before, it was always her and her mom, after all. ]

You guys like your states names, don't you?

[sixth]

Yeah. We still had my mom.

[ For a little while, anyway, before the aliens came and destroyed the planet and killed everyone. ]

We were part of a special ops project in the military. There were 50 of us so they named us after states. Probably not very creative, honestly.

[angele]

That's good at least. I didn't know much about my dad growing up... but I had my mom. It was nice for us, at least.

It fits for all 50, so it makes sense. Though I don't know if I'd want to get stuck with Oregon... Doesn't seem like a people name to me. Or West Virginia. But maybe just go by West? That'd not be so bad.

Then there's the north and souths. How would that sort? You couldn't just go by North for North Carolina what if North Dakota wanted to go by that? And you can't just do two Carolinas and two Dakotas. Maybe the four of them could work it out. North Dakota could be Dakota and South Dakota could be South, and then North Carolina could be North and South Carolina could be Carolina....

I'm rambling. You guys probably have a system for that anyway, don't you?


Montana would be a good name anyway...

Guess that's something we have in common.

North Dakota and South Dakota went by North and South. They were twins. Go figure. Carolina... You know, she just went by Carolina.

Never did really figure out why the Director picked those names. Maybe it was just an Earthborn thing.

[angele]

A little bit, at least.

See, I knew you guys probably had your system. [ She was going to ask about North and South Carolina, but maybe that's not so best in this situation... ]

Maybe the Director was from the United States? Or had some connection to it. I don't know how long your people have been in space.

[sixth]

He might have been.

[ He could probably access Epsilon's memories and know for sure, but he tries to avoid doing that whenever possible. ]

Since a little before the start of the twenty-second century. We haven't explored the whole galaxy yet but we're a lot further than the Sol system.

What year exactly is it where you're from, anyway?
