Might there be someone present who could explain the concept of "nuclear warfare" to me? To my knowledge, we've nothing of the sort in my world.

That's a broad topic to be condensed to a concept. But, in the barest sense, it's destructive bombing meant for annihilation.

[ ....No. Not like a smoke bomb at all... ]

Yes, it's an explosive by a very large definition.

[ He's not so good at teaching... ]

Very. It can wipe out countries, depending on the size. Or planets of enough are used.

[ Of course, he's used to the 2500s version of weaponry, so. ]

okay uh.

first what kind of knowledge do u have about explosives etc.
sweatysometimes: (:)))

Okay so. Nuclear warfare is the exchange or use of nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are incredibly powerful explosives. They come in two types fission bombs and fusion bombs. Fission are more common because they're easier to build.

The way they work is, uh. You need fissile material like uranium or plutonium and you basically use a conventional explosive to ram the fissile material into itself and create an ongoing nuclear reaction which creates a nuclear explosion.

Uh, does that make sense so far?

I'm assuming you don't know what a nuclear bomb is, either? If you know regular bombs, think of those only much worse. If you don't know bombs, think of it as having the ability to drop a forest fire on an entire city or nation.

Why are you asking?

[personal profile] hedone 2017-03-16 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm saying it's destructive and has long-lasting consequences. Though there's some burning involved, too, more often than not.

Was it? I hope no one lingered too long.

The concept is the intent of absolute decimation of your opponent.

Perhaps not, but there are some who have such weaponry at their disposal do so in response to others with a similar arsenal.
It is a...dangerous and appalling measure of defense. I do not condone it, but where I am from, such means of mass destruction are unfortunately common.

A method used to inflict widespread damage that lasts far longer than traditional warfare, takes far too many innocent lives in the initial blast to be termed anything but mass slaughter, and endangers countless civilians for generations to come. Typically used by those who want to end something quickly but either don't realize or don't care that the aftereffects aren't worth the cost of the lives lost as a result of those actions. Soldiers belong on the battlefield, not in a room pushing a button several thousand miles away from where the actual battle is occurring.

[ He's... not terribly fond of the idea of large numbers of civilian deaths. Too much of that in his past to ever make it okay. ]

Because it's the victor that writes the history books, they'll brand it as an act of heroism in the face of a ruthless enemy that required extreme measures to subdue, but in reality, it's nothing more than an act of cowardice.

I heard about Oros' destruction, I hadn't heard that's how it happened.

I'm not really sure I know the best way to explain nuclear warfare. It's war, obviously, with nuclear weapons. It's the nuclear part that's harder to explain. It's... a type of explosion that's huge and devastating.
