I've only been here a short time and I'm already getting one hell of an idea to what kind of people are showing up here.
And from what I've seen, it's pathetic. [He's not going to pull any punches here, what with a rasping, echoing voice from under an almost owl-like mask that's... probably supposed to be a skull. A sort of black fog hangs around him when he speaks, even more so when he scoffs or laughs.]

Ordinary people are going to get killed here. That means you, so I hope you've got a good idea of how to keep your skin unscarred, because I'm not someone who's going to put myself in danger to rescue someone who doesn't even know what end of a gun spits bullets.

If you're a civilian in your home world, consider taking up housekeeping on the ships while the people who know what they're doing go to deal with the aliens and dangerous flora on missions.

And for those who do know what you're doing... don't go playing hero. Don't be stupid, just for the lives of those who aren't smart enough to protect themselves.

[Nyeh! Goku sticks his tongue out at the camera.]

...Says the cheeky kid making faces over a video post.

Says the old guy in a weird mask callin' a bunch of strangers pathetic.

[But, hm, actually thinking about what this guy is saying:]

You're worried about them?

Who the hell says I'm old. [Way to hit a nerve, man. Yeah ok, he's old, but that means nothing.]

And I'm not saying I'm worried, either. The less people to die stupidly, the better.

[Yeah, okay, maybe in a really twisted way, if you turn your head to the side and squint, maybe he IS worried. In a way.]

Your voice is all raspy like an old guy's.

[Own your age, Gabriel. Anyway, I'm not saying Goku's heard shit like this before but he might have heard shit like this before.]

Well, yeah, obviously the less people die the better. Have people been getting into trouble? Are you gonna protect the guys who can't fight?

It's a side-effect to being dead.

[He'll own it when he's in the GRAVE.

Either way, he tips his head back, fixing the monkey with a cocky expression, a sound of irritation hissing out from under his mask.]

Have you looked at the Mission Overviews? There's more than enough things on these missions that could get ordinary people killed.

Can't be everywhere at once.

Another dead guy?!

[What the fuck!! And this guy is dressed all cool and scary!! That's hardcore! Goku is easily impressed!]

Uh, I had a look but I didn't get to sign up in time.

But didn't they say they only wanted guys who know how to fight and stuff?

['Another' definitely gets his attention. His head turns, almost curiously--it's hard to tell what he's thinking when you can barely see his eyes under that mask.]

You'll have to point out this 'other' dead guy is. Not every day you meet another ghost. [He's convinced that the dude is going to be like him, but...]

And of course they did. But do you really think that people who want to explore other planets and have adventures while in space will listen to warnings?

[Urk. He shouldn't have said that. Especially since the guy in question isn't due to die for like another twenty years.]

Um... Maybe later. [Or never. That's up to Koumyou.]

Anyway, if they're dumb enough to ignore that, why do you care so much what happens to them?

['Maybe later.' Don't try to fool him, he understands Dad Talk. He squints at this monkey from the other side of the video screen. Deciding to push more about it later. Sorry, kid.]

Because I can already see the posts being made by the friends of said dumbasses. 'Noone helped my friend, I couldn't because I wasn't signed up for a mission, this is such irresponsibility'.

It's called cutting the head of the fish off before the rest of it goes rotten.

[Go ask his foster-grandpa, leave him out of it. Goku understands nothing anyway.]

What've fish got to do with it... I haven't seen any posts like that and even if they do say that, you don't have to listen. You're not in charge, right? It's not your job.

[It's not Goku's job either and he still cares about people but that's just because he's nice. Careful, Reaper, he'll start thinking you're secretly nice too.]

... it's a metaphor. There's no actual fish involved. [It's like talking to young Jesse again, he swears to whatever god there is.]

And of course we'll have to listen when they start. Because we'll be made out to be heartless and uncaring for turning a blind eye to it.
Which is why it's good to preemptively dig nails into it before it starts.

None of us are in charge of it. And it's no job of any of ours.

I'm not playing hero. And noone else should, either.

Do you care if they call you stuff like that?

[He doesn't sound like that kind of guy, but maybe he's a lot more sensitive than he's letting on.]

I'm not a hero either, and I don't care if people I don't know call me names. But if you do, you should probably quit callin' them stuff like "pathetic".

[You die being a hero and you start to resent seeing it in others. That's all there is to it.]

I do. Being called a 'Hero' puts expectations on you.

Expectations to throw your life away protecting people you don't know, or people who might not give a damn about who you are or what kind of life you lived.

All they want is to someone to save them when they're in deep and can't get themselves out. [But pathetic would be a good word to call them, he thinks.]

... Sometimes when you're in trouble like that, you need someone to save you.

You should just do what you want. Don't worry about what other people expect from you, just save whoever you want or go hang out on your own if that's all you care about. None of us care what you do.

[They'll think he's an asshole, but that's not the point.]

[There's a momentary pause before he bothers to reply to the kid, a small whisp of black smoke escaping out from under his mask. Nearly like a sigh, soundless and smoky. Finally, he waves a hand at the screen.]

...And I plan on doing what I want. That was never in question.

...

What's your name, kid.

[Goku peers curiously at that weird smoke business, before grinning brightly.]

Good! That's what I'm gonna do too.

My name's Goku! [Just like his username. No one told him to be creative.] What about you?

...Just like your username. Here I'd thought you'd had a fondness of Chinese literature. [His tone is one that's vaguely sarcastic, but he should have figured.]

It's Gabriel. ...'Reaper' works equally as well.

Um, I don't really know anything about that. [Though he is pretty obviously Chinese.] It's just my name. I like it a lot though!

Anyway, it's nice to meet you- ... um, do you like Gabriel or Reaper then?

Didn't think so. It isn't important. [Not like he was any great bastion of knowledge on literature anyway, it was probably for the best.] Guess it suits you, anyway. [Because honestly... this Goku kid was kind of monkeylike in the way he talked and teased.]

Prefer Reaper. But I know from experience, people get snitty about a name like mine. [Which explains why he offered up 'Gabriel'. He's had enough people making comments along the lines of 'what a stupid name' or 'I'm not calling you that'. It was a headache.]

[Not a monkey!! ~~Totally a monkey.~~]

That's dumb, it's your name. [Getting indignant on Reaper's behalf? Maybe. Though, to be fair, he completely misses any reference he's making with that stupid name.] That's really rude... Don't worry, I'll call you Reaper!

[And maybe glare at anyone calling him Gabriel. Congrats, Reaper, you've got a monkey friend now.]
