Replicators recycle any items you can think of and break them down to the smallest particles, then reassemble them to take the shape of whatever material you want, provided the matrix is uploaded into the computer. So technically it can use thin air. Or trash. Food leftovers, what have you. Lavoisier's law taken to the ultimate level, if you will.
