I don't know about the ship's calendar, but I'm going to keep one following the Gregorian calendar back on Earth. That winter themed celebration last night with the sudden intrusive gift problem I faced today reminds me of North American Christmas, so I'm counting today as December 25th!

( happy birthday to himself, he guesses? )

Speaking of, did anyone else find unexpected packages left in their room overnight? Maybe even something alive? I've spent all day trying to figure out what this thing is or what it eats, but even the people who pass as veterinarians here swear they've never seen anything like it.

Yes! They are. In the end, it's up to use to build those relationships to have those people we want to exchange with, even when the ones we thought we had are gone.

Oh! So many little things! We set up trees for New Years, decorated with lights and ornaments and stars on top, or anything else you like. We do gift exchanges with friends and family then. There's older legends involved there, with Father Frost and his granddaughter, but that's more for the children. Presents can be left under the tree at a friends, or brought over on New Years! Whatever works best. There are lots of salads and food to eat and champagne or other sparkling wines to drink. A bunch of people listen to the chimes of the clock in Kremlin at midnight. It's a great time to make a wish! The more dramatic way being where you write your wish on paper, burn it over champagne while the clock chimes, and drink it all down. The less dramatic is you simply make a wish in your own heart. Then there are the fireworks after midnight that can go on for quite a while! Big shows, or the small ones people shoot off in the streets.

I count seven, one in each of the colours of the rainbow.

It sound as if you really enjoy this holiday. It does sound nice, however. How long from now is New Years?

[ To put it lightly, but Cassian is intrigued. ]

If I took...three of them, off your hands, would that be alright?

( Cassian, join him in his celebration of the New Year. There's literally nothing to lose (except watch the ship head right into Event Hellrizon, whoops?) )

In another seven ship-day cycles! If I'm celebrating anything, it's going to be the New Year. You're welcome to join me! I can even try making one of the usual salads if I can track down the closest ingredients. You think it's challenging making familiar dishes in foreign countries, it's the same thing all over again in foreign space.

Hah, why not? That's all right with me. Stop by anytime and pick any three you like!

That doesn't sound like a bad idea. Let me know when and where you're going to be holding these festivities or if you need help with cooking.

Foreign planets fall prey to the same issues, I'm afraid.

One of the lounge areas near the flats we all live in would make the most sense. Too small to really use any of the flats unless we had to! As for cooking, how about you make a dish as you like, too? That way we double our spread from the start.

Ah, so one tiny form of familiarity in all the rest. I'll take it!

( the answer to the question on his location ends up being an address to one of the third floor levels of the housing section. Victor goes about setting up all the seven flower crowns so they rest across the desk space; the purring unidentified creature ends up tucked under an arm to keep it away from Makkachin's curious mouth. )

I could manage that. [ It'll be good for him, cooking, plus? A chance to observe these other people. What could go wrong?

He could start a list but he won't. ]

I'll be there in a few minutes.

[ Roughly three later there's a knock. ]

to action!!

[genice]

( Makkachin lifts his head off his paws at the knock, going still before offering a low woof at the unfamiliar sound. Ax has been here before, but past that, no one really comes a knocking.

Victor calls out: )

Be right there! It's okay, Makkachin, we're expecting this captain.

( So to speak. He places his hand on the panel that cues the door to slide back into the wall, smiling curling his lips up when he sees someone indeed standing there. Makkachin hauls himself to his feet, tail wagging, and Victor offers Cassian his hand for shaking. )

Captain Andor? Come in. The flower crowns are all laid out on the desk.

( Which he'll gesture to with a toss of his hand after they do or don't shake hands; he steps back to invite Cassian inside, rather than continue to be a block at the entrance simply in standing there. )

[ouzel]

[ Cassian does indeed shake Victor's hand, before stepping in through the doorway and offering Makkachin an open palm to sniff.

His eyes then go to the flower crowns and Cassian debates for a moment. Green for Jyn. Blue for Bodhi. Red for Chirrut and Baze. ]

Can I take these three?

[genice]

( Makkachin sniffs, then tries to get in a good lick, content with his greeted lot in life. Victor taps his hand on the panel again out of reflex more than active thought, closing the door like he would in pretty much any situation. A glance over at the crowns earns a nod of his head; they're an unexpected surprise, but he's more fond of the curtains he bought and has hidden the emptiness of space behind than this intrusion into his space made so blatantly apparent. )

They're yours.

( Hell, he's tempted to see if Cassian wants the damn furball sitting on the desk too, but with no one having been able to identify it he's not sure what he'd be offering for him to take away. )

Any particular reason for those three?

( He's curious, because of course he is; he just doesn't expect an answer either. )

[ouzel]

[ The dog gets a pat for his trouble, but no licking, plz; Cassian is standing upright again by that point, moving towards the flower crowns with a little hesitance. ]

They remind me of friends. [ That's a safe sort of thing to say, isn't it? ] Who aren't here, obviously.

[genice]

( Victor follows along after, overshooting the desk to slap his hand on his thigh, calling Makkachin over to keep him from bothering Cassian. They remind me of friends. Unconsciously, Victor's left hand moves to run his fingers over the gold rin he wears on his right hand. Who aren't here, obviously.

He quirks a lopsided smile. )

Obviously, huh? Not always the easiest thing to accept.

( Not by far. Still. )

I'm glad. Reminders can be powerful things, when they're reminding us of the people who matter to us. ... What are their names?

[ouzel]

[ Cassian points them out in turn. Red: ] Chirrut and Baze. [ Blue: ] Bodhi. [ Green: ] Jyn.

Did you want anything in exchange for them?

[genice]

( Still fiddling with his ring, he blinks, then smiles as he shakes his head. It's a much softer expression, nostalgia something he actively feels in this moment. )

I think you already have.

( In naming the people he's named. It's not anything owed, so Victor will take it as the sum total of this exchange. )

They're all your coworkers, so to speak?

[ouzel]

[ Well. He can accept that. ]

They are, but they are not all ranked as I am.

[ Jyn had thrown a fit over being 'assigned' a Sergeant. Cassian allows himself a little smile at the memory. ]

[genice]

I suppose they wouldn't be. ( If his vague memories of military ranks and groupings are anything to go by. ) Were you all involved in active fighting? Military things are all a little...

( He makes a rolling motion with his hand; )

... out of my usual depth.

( he himself has stayed out of the parts of Russian nationalism that looked toward military might as being yet another way of affirming their importance and strength in the modern world. there's a lot people hold on to in order to combat the instabilities that feel so much bigger than they are. )

[ouzel]

That's all right. [ That it's out of his depth. People fight for their families, for themselves, for others. There have to be civilians in there somewhere, right?

Besides he wouldn't wish his life, his past, on anyone. Even a stranger. ]

We were. There's a war going on, where we're from.

[ Cassian gives a bit of a shrug. What can you do? ]

( Fight, run, die, or stay out of the way, mostly. Sometimes none of those are really options. Sometimes they all are. )

Mm. I suspected that might have been the case. ... For what it's worth, I'm sorry to hear that.

( War isn't something to be proud of, not knowing the costs of war even decades after the fact. Or the countless smaller wars that crop up and are stamped out, as if each one is a badge of pride to be worn when you're not wiped off the face of the planet.

He supposes that's a victory either way, albeit a hollow one at times. )

Must make this place a different kind of contrast. For all they don't tell us, I'm not sure it feels like a military run situation.

[ouzel]

It's worth something, [ Cassian assures him, because it does. How much, in the end? He can't tell, but that's okay.

It really is. ]

If it's military run it's on no shoestring, that's for certain. But you're right, we don't feel like conscripts. [ Yet, anyway. ]

[genice]

( THE, NEXT MONTH... but for now, Victor chuckles, moving his hand and picking up the fuzzball that'd shown up that morning to hold it between his palms. )

Not at the moment. We're assigned to jobs at random, based on "experience" the crew has had with people "like us" over the years. It's a curious response. I don't think I've ever seen people integrated quite like this in any group, especially when so thoroughly foreign.

( He lifts his shoulders in a small shrug, looking up from his small fuzzy companion. )

Breaking and entering to leave gifts is a fascinating tradition I hadn't anticipated either. Space is truly captivating.

[ouzel]

That last part I am not terribly fond of. [ It would mean one of two things: one being he shot a (possibly well meaning?) intruder he wasn't expecting and two being that someone could get past him in his sleep. He hopes that neither of those are true at any point in time. ]

Or the part in the middle, actually. I was in the hospital ward so I was a little disoriented by the time I received the introduction speech. This "experience" is determined by what, exactly? What they know about us? What they don't?

[genice]

( Someone rescue this tribble from Victor. He gives it a very small toss of a few centimeters up, catching it gently and lifting it up to his ear.

Still purring What even. )

Oh, according to all the crew I've been taking time to introduce myself to over drinks in their off hours, absolutely nothing. Once upon a time the Eluvio used to conduct interviews and place the anomalies into jobs based on their skills. For some reason that no one could explain, it apparently went poorly. They found a much higher success rate in randomly assigning each person to a position to earn their keep, with no regard for skillsets.

( He rests the tribble against his chest. Victor hasn't been smiling for a while now. )

If you ask me, that sounds much more like keeping people off-center to encourage them to integrate to find stability.

( Which sounds familiar, for all he's not going to mention why. )

[ouzel]

[ It won't be Cassian, unfortunately. He doesn't know what the thing is and has no particular need for pets at the moment.

His eyes do watch the creature, however. It doesn't seem affected by this treatment, so. Mental shrug in Cassian's corner. ]

Have any of them talked about their homeworlds? [ Or is this part and parcel of home for them now? Everyone seems a little too acclimated in Cassian's opinion, but that might be easily explained by the dissatisfied leaving. If he bought that sort of thing. ]

There's a lot of things to do that, isn't there? And yet just enough to keep people comfortable on the other side of things.

It's all too neat. [ Cassian crosses his arms. ]

( So the tribble continues its trial by... existence.

Victor gives one abortive shake of his head. )

People might, but most of those I speak with either don't claim to come here as we did, or talked about those who had leaving in other ways. Staying on planets visited, moving off-ship onto space stations, taking positions on other ships.

( Which he also thinks is too neat, to dovetail with what Cassian mentions. It does prompt him into smiling; not without a certain wry humour when he speaks. )

There is. They've even approved the creation of an ice skating rink, after the proper paperwork was filled out and filed. I admit that took me by surprise.

( Yes, he'd asked for it, and hell yes he's planning to skate there when it's manifested, but he'd fully expected to be denied for asking about something so ostentatious and single focused as an ice skating rink. )

[ouzel]

[ Cassian raises his eyebrows at that. ]

An ice rink. Really?

[ He sounds both incredulous and curious. Growing up on an ice planet? He skated once or twice, before everything went to shit. ]

Is that a passion of yours?

[genice]

( The question prompts Victor into a brief bout of genuine laughter. He holds up the tribble with a wink. )

You could say so! I'm a professional figure skater back home. There's a list of very impressive titles attached to my name, but considering my medals are back home with the rest of my career, listing them seems a little silly.

( Down comes the tribble, now casually tucked against his side. Added as a light jest: )
